The Dominican Republic boasts warm tropical weather year-round, but tropical showers can surprise you. Pack light, breathable clothing—think tropical prints, but make sure the fabric is lightweight. Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, a wide-brim hat, and water-resistant sandals for your beach adventures.

Getting There

Your journey begins with a flight leaving Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Charlotte (CLT), and then onward to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). Be prepared for a long walk to the baggage carousel upon arrival. We highly recommend hiring a bag carrier for around $10 USD—it saved us time and helped us navigate the airport to find Amstar, which provided our transfer service.

Airport to Resort Transfer

A private transfer from the airport to Secrets Tides Resort takes about 45 minutes to an hour. The drive is an experience in itself—watch for mopeds weaving through traffic, narrow roads, and an abundance of new construction showcasing Punta Cana’s rapid development.

Secrets – Tides is all-inclusive, however at the airport, baggage handlers often work for tips alone, helping you navigate with ease. Drivers who get you safely to the resort or excursions, and the friendly staff on your sightseeing adventures, will also value your kindness. Secrets Tides Resort Overview

This brand-new resort centers around a series of beautifully designed pools that stretch from the entrance to the beachfront. Surrounding the pools are four-story guest buildings, with one building offering breathtaking oceanfront views. Despite the resort being fully booked, it never felt crowded. The layout is designed with plenty of private seating and cozy nooks from the lobby to the beach, making it perfect for couples and groups alike.

For pool lovers, Secrets Tides is a dream destination.

Secrets Tides offers a poolside paradise designed to meet every guest's idea of the perfect day in the sun. Surrounded by lush tropical landscaping, the resort’s pools are lined with ample recliners, in-water loungers, and private cabanas, creating the ultimate relaxation experience. 

• Infinity Pool: Overlooking the beach, this pool is a social hub with its swim-up bar and plenty of spots to soak up the sun or relax in the water.
• Lap Swimming: Fitness enthusiasts will appreciate the large main pool that is perfect for swimming laps early in the morning or opt for a swim-out suite with a shorter pool suitable for lap swimming.
• Preferred Club Pool: Reserved exclusively for Preferred Club guests, offering enhanced privacy and service.

All pools have both a swim-up bar and a convenient dry-land bar on the side, so you’re never far from your favorite cocktail no matter where you choose to relax poolside.

Our favorite spot was the infinity pool overlooking the beach near the Sugar Reef Swim-Up Bar, where we even practiced a little dancing in the water. During a short rain shower, we ducked under the bar’s roof, where we met a lively couple from New Mexico - proof that Secrets Tides is great for both quiet moments and meeting like-minded travelers.



The Beach

Secrets Tides’ beach is a sandy paradise along the Atlantic Ocean, with a nearby reef that keeps the waves manageable. The surf is active but relaxing, offering a serene backdrop for sunbathing or beach walks. We opted for a stroll and loved the abundance of thatched-roof umbrellas providing shade. Volleyball enthusiasts can enjoy the court, or you can simply unwind and soak in the tranquil vibes.

• Barefoot Grill – Enjoy casual, beachside eats like burgers, pizza, and more.
• Meraki – A Mediterranean-Asian fusion with everything from sushi and eggrolls to octopus and beef kabobs. Reservations required.
• Portofino – Classic Italian cuisine, including a standout lasagna. Reservations required.
• Market Center – A breakfast favorite with extensive buffet lines featuring diverse food stations and mouthwatering desserts.
• Patio – Mexican-inspired dishes, perfect for kicking off your vacation.
• Tierra – A Brazilian steakhouse with South American-inspired dishes.
• CoCo – Coffee shop offering ice cream, pastries, and your favorite hot beverages. This cozy spot was our go-to for a midday pick-me-up or an indulgent treat.

Departure: A Relaxing Goodbye

Our checkout was at noon, but our transfer to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) wasn’t until 3 PM. We spent the extra time enjoying lunch and a final visit to CoCo’s for a latte and ice cream. The private transfer, arranged by Amstar, was smooth and shared with another couple. With sunny skies, a breeze, and low humidity, it was the perfect end to a rejuvenating trip.
